Hard to believe, but it’s been for almost two years now, that the ‘classic’ Grencsó Open Collective has been performing the last time at the Opus, especially as both the leader and the band members are regulars of the club, where, of course, they have peformed in quite a number of different formations last year. We had recently already a brief chance to hear them together again in the first program block of the successful Adyton Christmas, with their special program dedicated to György Szabados, but now finally the time has come to enjoy a complete evening with the Collective.
Experimental electronic and contemporary music, free jazz, free improvisations and ethno-jazz have all their place in the signature sound of the quartet, working together for years already. Sleaziness and tension, enormous energies and mystical restraint, short etchings alternating with large-scale pieces, simplicity and virtuosity of folk songs form a whole in their dynamic and rhythmic performance. Grencsó, with his usual laconism, only told about the present program that “everything's as usual ... new songs, old instruments ...”
