Sun-Mi Hong is considered one of the most exciting emerging drummers composing and band leading in the Netherlands. After touring with such projects as Karel Boehlee Trio, Benjamin Herman and Daahoud Salim Quintet, she is already provoking a large response throughout Europe. Her sound pallet pulls from many diverse sources. A bachelor & master’s degree from the renowned Conservatorium van Amsterdam has seen to a strong and rooted basic in jazz, improvisation and technical ability. However, Sun-Mi’s unique sound and approach comes from much broader sources. With a keen interest in Korean traditional music, she is influenced by the percussions of her country. Alongside this, her compositional style is influenced by impressionistic classical music. In short, Sun-Mi offers up an entirely original and extremely relevant artistic output.

The Sun-Mi Hong Quintet has captured this essence. The band walks the line between elaborate composition and the great void that is improvised music. The Quintet features some of the most enthralling musicians based in the Netherlands. Alessandro Fongaro (double bass) and Youngwoo Lee (piano) make up the rhythm section. A rhythm section that stand as a total unit, with the immense ability to barrel into the twists and turns of improvisation while letting go of predefined rules. Nicolo Ricci (tenor saxophone) and Alistair Payne (trumpet) toy with the rhythm sections capability. Like a wave, both horn players are able to roll in and out of dark melodies and bubbling textures.
“Sun-Mi is a great musician who not only plays crazy, but is also very enterprising, takes initiatives and is open to all kinds of different musical movements. I really enjoy playing with her because she encourages me to play a different repertoire and also to push boundaries myself.” (Benjamin Herman)
